Coaching Authorization

 
   
Question: What course work must I complete to receive the coaching authorization?  
  Answer:

(A) one semester credit hour or ten contact hours in a course relating to knowledge and understanding of the structure and function of the human body in relation to physical activity.

(B) one semester credit hour or ten contact hours in a course relating to knowledge and understanding of human growth and development of children in youth in relation to physical activity.

(C) two semester credit hours or twenty contact hours in a course relating to knowledge and understanding of the prevention and care of athletic injuries and medical and safety problems relating to physical activity.

(D) semester credit hour or fifteen contact hours relating to knowledge and understanding of the techniques and theory of coaching interscholastic athletics. At least five hours of this course must deal with professional ethics in coaching
Question: If I have not finished all of this course work, may I apply for a temporary coaching authorization?
Answer: No, the law makes no provision for the issuing of a conditional or temporary coaching authorization.
Question: How much does the coaching authorization cost?
Answer: The coaching authorization presently costs $85 for 5 years. The renewal also costs $85 for 5 years.
Question: Should I send in originals of my transcripts and certificates of completion or will copies be accepted?
Answer: Send in original transcripts and certificates. We have accepted some copies in the past, but will not be able to do so in the future.
Question: What other courses fulfill the requirements for the four coaching authorization courses?
Answer: The courses which most commonly meet the requirements are:

Structure and Function of the Human Body
-Human anatomy
-Human physiology
-Kinesiology

Human Growth and Development
-Developmental psychology
-Child psychology
-Adolescent psychology
-Dynamics of human development
-Growth and motor performance
(We cannot accept educational psychology, general psychology, or abnormal psychology to meet this requirement.)

Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries
-First Aid and Safety in Sports
-Basic Athletic Training

Theory of Coaching
*We will accept a course in the theory of coaching in general or in the theory of coaching a specific sport.

Question: If I let my coaching authorization expire, do I have to take the 4 courses over again?
Answer: No, you need only complete the five renewal activities referred to below.
Question: If I get a teachers license and I have the coaching authorization, may I add the coaching endorsement to my teaching license?
Answer: You may add the endorsement only if you took the individual courses for the minimum number of hours of college credit (NOT CEUs!):
  1. The theory of coaching (1 semester hour minimum)
  2. Human growth and development (1 semester hour minimum)
  3. Structure and function of the human body (1 semester hour minimum)
  4. The care and prevention of athletic injuries (2 semester hours minimum)
If you took a 3 semester hour coaching authorization program, you have not met minimum requirements for any of the individual requirements.

Question: How old does an individual have to be to get the coaching authorization?
Answer: An individual must be 18 years of age in order to be issued the coaching authorization.
Question: How do I renew my coaching authorization?
Answer:

Coaching Classes - (Sponsored or offered by an accredited college or university, or Area Education Agency, or professional athletic association, or the Iowa High School Athletic Association or the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.)


Rules Meetings - (Sponsored by the Iowa High School Athletic Association or the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.)


Coaching Clinics - (Sponsored or offered by an accredited college or university, or Area Education Agency, or professional athletic association, or the Iowa High School Athletic Association or the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.)


Coaching Workshops - (Sponsored or offered by an accredited college or university, or Area Education Agency, or professional athletic association, or the Iowa High School Athletic Association or the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. Clinics and workshops sponsored by local districts may be acceptable if the events were designed for, advertised to, and open to the public.)


Question: If I attend a rules meeting to renew my license, must it be in the sport that I coach?
Answer: Not now, but this also may change in the near future. It is best if you attend rules meetings in the sport which you coach.
Question: If my coaching authorization has expired, or if it is about to expire, and I have not attended five activities, what can i do?
Answer: You may apply for a Coaching Authorization Extension, which will give you a year to accumulate the five needed activities. Remember, at least one of the activities must deal with professional Ethics related to coaching.
