Statement
of Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller
on Microsoft's Proposed Remedies
Attorney
General Miller is head of the Microsoft Working Group of Nineteen States
and the District of Columbia.
The remedies proposed are inadequate. These measures would not have
prevented the serious violations of law found by Judge Jackson, and
they are not adequate remedies to assure that the law is not broken
in the future.
The
States also believe this case should continue to move steadily ahead
to a conclusion and not be derailed or dragged out by Microsoft. Judge
Jackson has set exactly the right tone and pace, moving ahead carefully
and thoroughly, but swiftly. That is in the interest of consumers and
basic justice in this matter.
We
stand by our proposed remedies, which call for both restrictions on
Microsoft's anti-competitive conduct and a reorganization of the company.
Our proposal represents measured relief that will spark competition
through innovation and price competition. Our proposed remedies truly
are remedies - effective measures to prevent Microsoft's serious violations
of the law as found by the Judge, and practical means to promote competition
and fairness, innovation, choice, and the best prices for consumers.
