To news editors.

Please find attached a Trial Information that was filed late Tuesday afternoon in Butler County District  Court in Allison, accusing Mark Daryl Becker of the crime of murder in the first degree, in the death of  Edward Thomas on June 24, 2009.

As the Trial Information indicates, District Court Judge Stephen Carroll set arraignment for 9:30 a.m.,  Tuesday, July 7th, 2009, at the District Courtroom, Butler County Courthouse in Allison, Iowa.

Judge Carroll continued Becker’s cash-only bond in the amount of $1 million.  Becker is being held at the  Cerro Gordo County Jail in Mason City.  Becker’s date of birth is 6-3-85.  In Iowa, the crime of murder in  the first degree is punishable by life in prison.

The prosecution is being handled cooperatively by the Butler County Attorney and the Iowa Attorney  General’s Office (at the request of the Butler County Attorney.)

A Trial Information also was filed Tuesday in Butler County District Court, accusing Mark D. Becker of the crime of Eluding or Attempting to Elude While Participating in a Felony on June 20, 2009.  (The attached Trial Information contains a few more details of the allegations.)   The alleged crime is a Class D felony,  punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of $750 to $7,500.

I believe that is about all the information we may provide at this time.  We always note that a criminal  charge is merely an accusation, and a suspect or defendant is considered innocent until and unless  proven guilty in a court of law.
