- Livable Community Initiative
In 2007, the Iowa Legislature appropriated dollars to the Department on Aging to fund a Livable Community Initiative. The purpose of the initiative was to contract with an organiation that wold "work with the governmental, business, educational, health, religious, social, leisure, and service segments of the urban-rural county to create a replicable and portable model of a livable community where persons can age successfully." Through a Request for Proposal process, the Johnson County Board of Supervisors was selected as teh receipient of the funding. One of the requirements of the grant was the creation of a model that could serve as a guide for other communities interested in building their own local initiatives to transition to a living community where "citizens can grow up and grow old with maximum independence, safety and well being."
