February 1, 1999 Looking ahead to Iowas Future Des Moines, IA Governor Vilsack today announced the creation of a Strategic Planning Council. The Governors Council is charged with identifying the way in which Iowans would like the state to look in the year 2020. Governor Vilsack has chosen Betsy Brandsgard, a Democrat, and David Oman, a Republican, to serve as co-chairs of the council. "I would like to see every Iowan have a voice in this Strategic Planning Council as it looks ahead to the next 20 years," Vilsack said. "What takes place in the next century affects all of us we invite Iowans to play a part in the important decision making process." The Council will include a bi-partisan group of Iowans from across the state whose mission is to plan for the 21st century. This diverse group will address the economic and social trends limiting individual and economic development in the state. "I appreciate the Governors confidence Betsy and me to assemble a diverse team of talented and thoughtful Iowans who will help us reach out to all citizens," Oman said. "We must create a compelling environment in which we can keep our children and grandchildren from leaving our state." "I applaud the Governors commitment to looking ahead into the 21st century," Brandsgard said. "I am looking forward to gathering ideas from as many Iowans as possible." The Strategic Planning Council is officially established today with the signing of an executive order. Oman and Brandsgard will begin the process of looking for the members of the 21-member task force. The council will begin planning in May and report back to the Governor in one year with their recommendations. |
