Klaes Award

The Klaes Award is presented to the member of each basic class that the class feels is the most congenial person in their class. This is decided solely by each graduating class by sealed ballot. This award is presented in honor of a Comanche Police Department officer, Bobby Klaes, who was killed in an untimely traffic accident shortly after graduating from the ILEA 69th Basic Class. One of his brothers is a member of the Clinton Police Department. Bobby possessed a very outgoing personality and his family members requested that an award be presented in his memory to the most congenial member of each basic class

Woodard Award

The Woodard Award is presented to the member of each basic class who earns the highest academic average. This award is presented on behalf of the wife and family of the late Jack Woodard who met an untimely death during his first term as Polk County Sheriff. Sheriff Woodard was a graduate of the 17th Basic Class at the Academy and was always a strong supporter of ILEA.

McCartney Award

The McCartney Award is given in memory of R. C. McCartney, who served for 25 years as the Sheriff of Floyd County. The award is given by his son, the late Judge Ralph F. McCartney, who was a Senior Iowa District Court Judge. This award is presented to a member of each basic class who the staff and members of the class feel is the most conscientious student in each class, as determined by sealed ballot. This award is perhaps the most coveted award, and has been presented to a member of each basic class since the 8th basic class graduated in October, 1969. This award was enhanced by Judge McCartney because of his interest in the Academy and its graduates by the inclusion of a $50.00 cash stipend that is presented with theis award

The Stark Award

The Stark Award is named in honor of former Story County Sheriff John P. Stark who served 42 years with that Office and most of that time as Sheriff. Sheriff Stark was a former President of the Iowa Sheriff's and Deputies Association, and a member of the National Sheriff's Association Board and has been revered as the "Dean of the Iowa Sheriff's". He also served as Chair of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy Council and has addressed numerous classes at graduation. This award, established in his honor, recognizes the top shooter in each basic training class. The determination is based on range performance in day and night handgun and day shotgun.
